The Libertarian Party of Alabama held its 2025 Annual Convention May 23-25 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, marking a milestone year as the party celebrated 50 years since its founding in the state.
A Landmark Year for LP Alabama
This convention wasn’t just another annual meeting. It was a celebration of five decades of Libertarian presence in Alabama. From its founding in 1975 to today, the party has endured setbacks, regained ballot access, and continued to advocate for liberty across the state.
As noted in the convention program, the mission remains clear: to stay ready, visible, and prepared for when more Alabamians seek an alternative to the two-party system.
Leveling Up the Convention Experience
The 2025 convention was one of the most ambitious and professionally produced events the party has hosted. Held in a full conference venue, the weekend featured:
- A structured multi-day program
- Guest speakers including 2024 Libertarian presidential nominee Chase Oliver and vice-presidential nominee Mike ter Maat
- A formal awards dinner
- Training sessions focused on building stronger affiliates
From staging and audiovisual production to scheduling and programming, the event reflected a deliberate effort to elevate the professionalism and visibility of the Libertarian Party of Alabama.
Attendance
While the convention delivered on quality, attendance did not fully match the scale of the event. 26 delegates ultimately participated in business proceedings.
Business of the Convention
The convention successfully completed a full slate of business.
Delegates:
- Conducted officer and committee elections
- Considered and voted on numerous bylaws proposals
- Advanced significant portions of the party platform
Key structural updates included changes to executive committee terms, regional organization, and convention procedures, along with extensive platform debate and refinement.
Leadership and Direction
The convention reaffirmed leadership while also focusing on long-term growth:
- Continued emphasis on building county affiliates
- Increased focus on fundraising and ballot access efforts
The weekend made clear that while growth has not always been linear, the foundation for expansion is actively being built.
Looking Forward
The 2025 convention served as a celebration of fifty years fighting for liberty. Over that time, the mission remains the same, but the opportunity ahead is even greater.
