In the News

From the AP:

Alabama Libertarian Party chairman Stephen Gordon said it's easier for independent and third party candidates to get on the ballot in most other states. For example, in Colorado only 800 signatures are required to run for a U.S. House seat.

"I would say Alabama has one of the most egregious thresholds in the country for getting on the ballot," Gordon said.

In addition to the signature requirement, a third party must receive 20 percent of the vote in an election to gain automatic access in the next election, Gordon said.

Change We Certainly Can't Afford

According to US News and World Report, the town of Edwardsville, AL wants a $375 million stimulus package:

At first glance, the town of Edwardsville, Ala., with a population of 194 people, might raise a few eyebrows with its bid to receive $375 million from the economic stimulus package being assembled by Barack Obama and lawmakers in Congress.

The tiny town, located near the Georgia border and 26 miles from the nearest "big city" of Anniston (population: 24,276), added 33 proposals—about two thirds of them related to "green" energy—to the list of "ready- to- go" projects assembled by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Total sum: $375,076,200.

That comes out to nearly $2 million per Edwardsville resident, although E. D. Phillips, the town's representative to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, says the projects would affect a wider region that comprises about 80,000 people. That number includes residents of nearby rural areas that aren't already incorporated into towns, along with the residents of Talladega Springs (population: 124), which partnered with Edwardsville and local municipal utilities on the projects.

Some of items for which Edwardsville wants the money include "a renewable energy museum, scenic railroad, and vineyards."

"This is certainly the Alabama version of the Bridge to Nowhere," stated LPA Chair Stephen Gordon. "Hopefully, Americans and Alabamians will be just as outraged over a Museum in Nowhere as they were about the Bridge to Nowhere."

Like most Americans, Libertarians oppose government bailouts and stimulus packages.

"All efforts by government to redistribute wealth, or to control or manage trade, are improper in a free society," reads a portion of the Libertarian Party platform.

Sheriff's Profiting from Inmate Food Allowance

The Libertarian Party of Alabama condemns the practice of having a county sheriff pocket money not used for feeding prisoners. The State of Alabama provides $1.75 per prisoner per day and the law provides for the sheriff to pocket any money not spent. This practice is ripe for abuse and was recently showcased with the Sheriff of Morgan County Greg Bartlett testifying that he had pocketed $212,000 over the last three years. Unfortunately, his prisoners appeared in such poor shape that U.S. District Judge U.W. Clemon ordered federal marshals to arrest Bartlett after hearing a string of skinny prisoners testify. Legislation will be introduced in the upcoming session to remedy this matter.

Statement from LPA Chairman Stephen Gordon on the automobile industry bailouts

Birmingham -
"With respect to the recent orgy of bailouts and many other issues, there are three general groups of people out there.  There are Democrats who support taxpayer-funded bailouts with Democratic strings attached.  There are Republicans who support taxpayer-funded bailouts with Republican strings attached.  And there are the rest of us -- who strongly disapprove of taxpayer-supported bailouts.  If you fall into the latter category, there is a good chance you are a libertarian."

Statement from LPA Chairman on the congressional passage of the Wall Street bailout

Birmingham - "Congress and Wall Street just 'rescued' $700 billion from the wallets of 'greedy' taxpayers," said state Libertarian chairman Stephen Gordon.  "The Bush-Obama-McCain-Bailout (BOMB) illustrates that there isn't a dime's worth of difference between the two parties."

Montgomery Advertiser hopes Alabamians have same gas shortage problems as Georgians

Libertarian Party rejects appeals for more bad government

"Alabamians should be proud that we beat Georgia on the football field over the weekend," Gordon said. "We should also be proud that we have better public policy pertaining to price gouging than Georgia. Or would the Montgomery Advertiser prefer that we limit our football scores to no more than one touchdown per quarter?"

As evidenced by recent debate pertaining to federal bailouts, the Libertarian Party is the only political party in America opposed to government intervention in the marketplace.

Bob Barr Accurately Predicted Bailout Crisis

Libertarian Party of Alabama Applauds Aderholt's "No" Vote

"Barr is consistently and courageously battling on principle for the rights of the common man -- unlike most of our state congressional delegation, leaders from both parties on the Hill, as well as McCain and Obama," said Gordon. "Obama claims to offer change, while he's picking the pocket of the taxpayer to enrich major corporations. McCain's claim of being a maverick is disingenuous at best, as his statements on the bailout place him in league with the president and the rest of the senior GOP leadership. The only presidential candidate supporting a constitutional limited role of government is Congressman Barr."

The Libertarian Party of Alabama urges all Alabama voters to continue to contact their elected representatives and demand that they vote "no" on any current or future bailout proposal.
